Police found a body following a fire in a basement flat in a neighbourhood frequented by transsexual sex-workers and court sources said magistrates were treating the death as murder.

Forensic tests were expected to identify the remains as those of a transsexual known only as Brenda, police said.

Copenhagen deal should have immediate effect, says Obama

Copenhagen deal should have immediate effect, says Obama: "

BEIJING, Nov 17 — US President Barack Obama said today that he wants key climate talks in Copenhagen next month to agree on a comprehensive new deal which has “immediate operational effect”, even if it is not legally binding.

Speaking after a bilateral meeting with Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, Obama also said that the world’s top two carbon emitters had also committed to take “significant” action to mitigate their output of carbon dioxide.

“Our aim there...is not a partial accord or a political declaration but rather an accord that covers all of the issues in the negotiations and one that has immediate operational effect,” Obama said of the Copenhagen talks.

Thai protesters denounce Thaksin’s royal remarks

Thai protesters denounce Thaksin’s royal remarks: "

BANGKOK, Nov 15 — Thousands of Thais gathered in central Bangkok today to protest at remarks made about the monarchy by fugitive ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The demonstrators were also angry about the ousted premier’s visit last week to neighbouring Cambodia, which refused to extradite him, sparking a diplomatic row.

Police said around 6,000 demonstrators were present by 5pm (6pm Malaysian time), making it one of the biggest protests by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) since its week-long seizure of Bangkok’s two airports late in 2008, which helped weaken a pro-Thaksin administration that lost power last December.

LOS ANGELES, Nov 13 — The International Documentary Association yesterday unveiled nominees for its widely-watched awards, putting its spotlight on non-fiction films that might also compete for Oscars early next year.

The key category of distinguished documentary achievement finds five nominees ranging from a film about four people competing in a television talent show in Afghanistan, “Afghan Star” to the story of a pair of faded rockers hoping for one last grasp at stardom, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil.”

The three other nominees are “Food, Inc.” about the US food industry, “Diary of a Times Square Thief,” which tells of a search for the writer of a diary that was sold on Ebay, and “Mugabe and the White African,” the story of a white African farmer who defies the government of Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe.
